The Physiotherapist will perform a detailed history and thorough physical examination to determine the potential cause of the problem, and to establish an individualized management plan. The Physiotherapist will observe, palate (feel) and listen to the jaw as it opens and closes, observe if there is any “grinding” and palpate facial and TMJ muscle tone and trigger points. They will also observe and measure the mobility, stability and strength of the joint. As part of the assessment, they will also check the upper neck’s spine alignment, joint mobility and status of the myofascial tissues.

The most common causes of TMJ dysfunction in malocclusion or other dental problems, poor postuer; behaviour that creates muscle tension (e.g. teeth grinding, clenching, habitual gum chewing or nail biting); trauma, or medical conditions such as osteoarthritis or chronic myofascial pain.

The treatment plan may include:

- Manual techniques: including soft tissue massage, trigger point release, stretches, joint mobilization and traction

- Modalities: electrical currents, ultrasound, laser, heat or ice to decrease pain, inflammation and muscular tightness

- Strengthening and flexibility exercises to improve joint mobility, muscle flexibility and strength

- Education on aggravating and relieving factors, including altering habits that are causing strain

- Acupuncture with electrical stimulation to relieve pain and promote the body’s own healing response by promoting endorphin release
